1934: A Year of Good Trouble

The book, “1934: A Year of Good Trouble,” grew out of a talk Teamsters leader Chris Silvera gave to ILWU Local 10 on July 5, 2024, the 90th anniversary of Bloody Thursday, when San Francisco police shot two strikers in the back: longshoreman Howard Sperry and union cook Nick Bordoise. Co-author Clarence Thomas, an ILWU Local 10 retiree and the book's co-author, introduced Silvera.
The book also profiles Local 10 activist Leo L. Robinson, known for leading labor's fight against apartheid in South Africa. It argues that three 1934 strikes in Toledo, San Francisco, and Minneapolis built momentum for labor that lasted into the mid-1960s.
